The Popular Sport of Pocket Bike Racing
Recreation November 19th, 2009Pocket bike racing, also called Mini GP racing, is racing that is done with the use of smaller versions of full size racing motorbikes, also known as pocket bikes. These bikes are raced around kart tracks. It’s a sport that is very popular in Japan and Europe, and is becoming increasingly popular in many other countries, in particular in the United States.
In general a pocket bike is around one quarter a regular motorbikes size, and has an internal combustion engine of between 40-50 cubic centimetres outputting three to fifteen hp, which varies with the exact model. Pocket bikes do not have a suspension but instead rely on the tires absorbing the bumps. Most weigh roughly thirty five pounds. Models designed for beginners will generally produce approximately 3 to 4 horsepower, while more expensive models can be much more powerful. The ideal pocket bikes for racing provide a good power-to-weight ratio. Accelerations and speed are often increased by modifying the basic pocket bike. In spite of their small size, both adults and children can reach speeds of at least 55 miles per hour when raced in good conditions.
Because they are small pocket bikes are easy to transport, and the cost of the bikes is low which increases their appeal to both adults and children. The lowest cost pocket bikes imported from China start at around $300 for a basic model, while you could pay as much as as $5500 for a top pocket bike from Italy. Children as young as six can be taught the motorcycle racing and adults can feel all the thrills of motorbike racing without the high costs and heavy risks associated with regular motorcycle racing.
